True sustainability is so much more than just keeping those energy bills down. In this post, I’m breaking down why factors like embodied carbon, product lifespan, and circular design matter just as much (if not more) when you’re choosing lighting for your building.
Let’s be honest: for years, the sustainability conversation in lighting has been pretty narrow. It’s almost always about energy efficiency and consumption. But when you dig deeper, you realise that real sustainability is about the whole picture—how products are designed, made, looked after, and eventually handled at the end of their life.
With net zero targets getting tighter and businesses facing real pressure to reduce their environmental footprint, choosing sustainable building products has become essential. And lighting? It’s absolutely part of that conversation.
This is where things get interesting. The industry is shifting away from the old “replace and dispose” mentality toward a “repair and maintain” approach. Instead of ditching an entire light fitting when something goes wrong, we’re now seeing modular products with replaceable components.
Think about what used to happen: a downlight fails, and you’d have to replace the whole thing. Now? Products with replaceable drivers and light engines mean you can swap out individual parts. This cuts down on unnecessary waste and reduces the demand for new resources in your supply chain.
We’re also seeing smarter, more adaptable lighting systems—ones that let you clip on emergency functions or microwave sensors as your needs change. This kind of flexibility means your lighting setup lasts longer and you waste less.
Resource efficiency is another crucial piece of the puzzle. Products that use fewer raw materials, incorporate recycled content, and generate less waste during manufacturing are increasingly in demand. And it doesn’t stop there—lighting that’s designed for easy disassembly makes it much easier to recover and recycle valuable materials when the product reaches the end of its life.
Here’s something that’s often overlooked: embodied carbon. Unlike operational carbon (which is generated while you’re using the light), embodied carbon covers everything from raw material extraction and manufacturing through to transportation, installation, and end-of-life processing.
This is a big deal. As a result, more and more specifiers are asking for transparency around where materials come from, how they’re made, and what their environmental performance looks like. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and other sustainability credentials can be really helpful here—they give you the insights you need to make smarter specification choices.
Before you think energy efficiency has been bumped off the priority list, it hasn’t. It’s still absolutely important. LED technology remains the gold standard for optimising energy use—it can cut consumption by up to 80% compared to older fluorescent or halogen fittings.
And when you layer smart control systems on top? Add occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting, and automated dimming? You’re taking energy efficiency to the next level. You’re ensuring lights are only on when and where they’re actually needed, cutting out unnecessary waste.
If you’re hunting for genuinely sustainable lighting products to specify, keep an eye out for TM66 accreditation. This badge of honour recognises products that meet stringent circular economy criteria specifically developed for the lighting industry.
TM66 provides a practical framework for assessing how circular a lighting product really is. It considers material selection, how easy it is to repair and upgrade, disassembly, and end-of-life management. It’s a shorthand for products that have seriously thought through their entire lifecycle.
Sustainable lighting isn’t just about switching to LEDs and cutting your energy bills (though that matters). It’s about choosing products designed with the whole lifecycle in mind—from the raw materials used, through to how they can be maintained, upgraded, and eventually recycled. It’s about embracing circular economy principles and building a future where lighting products stick around longer and waste far less.
