For years, lighting for the many industrial applications had been achieved using either the High Bay or Low Bay fittings comprising a range of High Intensity Discharge (HID) lamps including Mercury, High-Pressure Sodium and Metal Halide lamps, however all these options have generally been replaced with Solid-State Lighting, the LED light source.
At the time, these HID light sources provided an ideal solution for both factories and warehouses, as well as for the large out-of-town DIY and retail buildings, whilst having, at the time of introduction, was considered to be a high lumen package. Initially with Mercury lamps, which had a cool lamp colour, producing approximately 50-60 Lumens per Watt in white light and with a low Group 3 CRI value, then to High Pressure Sodium lamps having a very warm lamp colour and offering a performance of approximately 80-110 Lumens per Watt, but with a poor Group 4 CRI value, and then to Metal Halide lamps with the various lamp colours available, from warm through to daylight, with a range of performances of around 70-100 Lumens per Watt, and being generally offered with a Group 1B or possibly Group 2A CRI value, but for some exceptional lamps, a Group 1A CRI value was achievable.
Whilst offering acceptable suitability for the time, the restrictions of these lamps was that the installed fitting required a run-up period of time to achieve full performance and around not having the ability for dimming options, as well as having a shorter lamp life than the new SSL technology. Another restriction was that they could not be installed as integral maintained emergency luminaire, which possibly restricted their use somewhat for some applications.
The development of the LED Highbay and Lowbay removed all of these restrictions, in that the LED fittings could initially offer a 1-10Volt Analogue dimming function, and now a Digital Dimming option, as well as integrated smart control functions. An integral maintained emergency option is also available, removing the need to attempt locating Twin-Spots around the warehouse/factory or installing an additional system of emergency batten fittings to provide just the emergency lighting function.
Scroll forward to the present and the very recent release of the new S15 Catalogue from Ansell Lighting, which includes within the massive portfolio on offer, a range of Z LED Highbay and Lowbay industrial luminaire options.
The three Highbay and single Lowbay variances, encompass 15 different wattage and lamp colour options of luminaire selection across the range, and with the various additional dimming, lighting control, emergency, and sensor options, alongside a range of reflector, lens, and mounting bracket assemblies, certainly resulting in an extensive range, which presents the specifier with the opportunity to select the optimum fitting solution for their particular application.
Starting with the various highbay options on offer, there are three fitting solutions available, each with different functions and across different price points, starting with the ZLED PLUS, a premium product with massive lumen performance and an enhanced range of features offering significant added value to any application, then the ZLED PERFORMANCE, being the wide-range product, with optimum performance and with many additional features offering depth of choice, and finally, the ZLED ECO, a very cost effective solution with a good performance. Finally, the ZLED LINEAR fitting completes this extensive range, being a more traditional Lowbay type luminaire, with a shallow depth and suitable for surface mounting, alongside its many other features.
The ZLED PLUS is an industry leading, super high efficiency highbay fitting offering a minimum of a 200 Lumen/Watt performance and this robust LED highbay fitting is suitable for industrial, commercial, and retail applications where this massive performance, has allowed the reduction of the overall power consumption to offer appropriate industry acceptable light output comparable to the standard 100W, 150W and 200W fittings, but with addition of increased energy savings. This high specification fitting has ingress protection to IP65 and an impact rating to IK08. With a die-cast powder coated construction and heatsink to provide optimum thermals and performance, the fitting is offered with various installation options by means of drop rods, jack chain and catenary wire, in addition to the availability of bracket accessories for ceiling or wall mounting. The fitting is pre-wired with 3M of H05RN-F cable for ease and speed of installation. Offered in both 4000K and 6500K versions, with 1-10V Dimmable as standard, but where DALI Digital or OCTO Smart Control versions are available upon request. Also available with Emergency, Self-Test Emergency and DALI Emergency options as well as a Microwave Sensor option, completes the range solutions, other than the accessories of reflectors for controlled light distribution and the bracket for flexibility in mounting.
The ZLED PERFORMANCE is also a robust LED highbay for industrial, commercial, and retail applications. The die-cast powder coated construction and heatsink provide optimum thermals and performance, whilst offering alternative installation options by means of drop rods, jack chain and catenary wire and with the availability of bracket accessories for ceiling or wall mounting. Ingress protected is to IP65 and with a pre-wired with 3M of H05RN-F cable for ease and speed of installation. Offered in both 4000K and 6500K versions, with 1-10V Dimmable as standard but with an OCTO Smart Control version upon request. Available with Emergency, and with a Microwave Sensor option, as well as automatic 1-10V Dimming with time delay and pre-set dimming levels to select and a dipswitch or remote-control commissioning allows for versatile sensor programming, where the options available include, Hold Time, Stand-By Dim Level and many more. Supplied with a 110° beam distribution pattern, but additional lens options of mid (85°) and narrow (55°) beam angles, are available to offer an ideal solution for racking aisles.
Like, the previous fittings, the ZLED ECO is also a robust LED highbay for industrial, commercial, and retail applications. The die-cast powder coated construction and heatsink provide optimum thermals and performance, whilst offering alternative installation options by means of drop rods, jack chain and catenary wire. Offered in both 4000K and 6500K versions and with ingress protection to IP65 and an impact rating to IK06, whilst being with a pre-wired with 3M of H05RN-F cable for ease and speed of installation.
The ZLED LINEAR is a powerful and durable surface mounted IP65 linear high bay, perfect for the demands of industrial applications. With a die-cast aluminium construction provides enhanced thermal performance for longer LED lifespan and supplied with a 1.5m Suspension kit supplied as standard, however surface mounting and continuous mounting is possible with appropriate accessories. With an IP65 ingress rated enclosure, alongside being offered in a 5000K version and a 0-10V/1-10V dimmable function as standard, however, it must be noted that the installer must drill through the pilot hole and use an IP rated gland on install. A plug and play microwave sensor option is available, with a detection radius of 8metres and programmable by using the remote, where options include, hold time, stand by dim level, daylight sensor and many more, which offers maximum energy savings and with a mounting height of up to 12metres, making this Lowbay fitting ideal for both low level and medium level applications.
With such an extensive range of Highbay and Lowbay options, there should be a suitable option for nearly all applications, allowing the Ansell Lighting ZLED range to be the first selection point when looking to specify the luminaire to illuminate the next industrial, commercial, or large retail ‘shed’ project.
